Fly Record

Feb 2010 New Mexico Fly Record
February 02, 2010
Congratulations to Captain Anthony Mendillo who broke a new crew record by catching 12 sailfish on fly in one dayfishing out of Isla Mujeres, Mexico. February 1, 2010 angler Nassim Joaquin, the IGFA rep from Cozumel, Capt. Mendillo and mate Ruben Pena released 12 sailfish. This record surpasses Captain Butch Cox of the Prime Time who released 10 sailfish with angler Joe Zimmer a few years ago.

Congrats to Captain Mendillo for the 1st new crew record of 2010

I have had the pleasure of fishing with both Anthony and Ruben, both very talented Captains and well respected in the industry. Ruben is from Isla Mujeres and for many years ran Jack Dougherty's "OUTRAGE" in Isla Mujeres and the Bahamas.

Looks like Chub Cay, Bahamas is next up for some Blue Marlin fishing. Trying to get the dates together for the end of the month. Fishing the Pocket in late March on a south east wind makes for some outstanding billfishing. Keep you posted.

Well the season ended for us with a fourth place finish in the first annual "Little Yellow School House Island Time Sailfish Tournament". We caught 40 sails in two days of fishing and finished behind Glen Cameron's Floridian with 60 in two days, Kieth Greenberg's Contango with 58. The Goombay with Capt. Brian took 3rd with 55.. The sail bite continues to be outstanding in Isla Mujeres and will probably hold steady till the next full moon in March. I encourage anybody who missed this season to book now for next year.
I am trying to get together some pictures that were taken throughout the season So check back.

Isla Mujeres Update

Check out My Blog (New Blog) on my web site.

All I can say is that this is some of the best fishing of the year right now. All boats here are getting 40 to 80 bites a day. Top boats are catching 50 plus a day.. if you want to fish a half day numbers like 20 to 40 are not uncommon. Weather kept our group away this weekend but I have been riding other boats in order to give current reports. We fished a half day yesterday and catch 40...
We are booked all weekends to the end of the month but do have some weekdays available. Most Monday's through Wednesdays are still open. Side note it's 80 degrees and the island is in full swing.

Isla Mujeres Update

Fishing is goooood in Isla now and getting better...Just talked to Capt. Keith Greenburg who is running the Contango there right now. He says the fish are right out front(8miles from the beach) and it's all bird fishing. As of 11 o'clock yesterday morning he was 8 for 10. Not bad thus far. That means another double digit day for him. Keith don't come in till he hits 20(at least).. For any who don't know what I mean when I say bird fishing here is it in brief.

Off Isla Mujeres at this time of the year the bait schools are all over the surface mostly sardines. The sails work in packs to "ball" the bait and keep it on the surface as they annihilate the bait in an organized and poetic dance that is just incredible to see..Since live baiting is not allowed(and tooo easy) the way we fish "sails on the birds" is another technique that can only be seen to truly understand. We still dead bait these fish with circle hooks.

I will be there starting on Wednesday the 3rd..and like I have said still have a few days to fill...
